Dark Ride Family Rides
A dark ride is an indoor attraction in which guests travel aboard guided vehicles through a sequence of themed scenes, built from sets, lighting, sound, animation and projected effects. The vehicle follows a fixed path, so the operator controls exactly what each guest sees and when they see it. That control is the whole point: a dark riding experience is designed shot by shot, like a film the audience moves through.
The vehicles vary with the story being told. Trains and trackless cars suit most layouts, boats work where water is part of the scenery, and suspended systems lift guests above the scenes. What they have in common is a slow, steady pace, usually around one metre per second, which leaves time for the scenes to register. A dark ride does not rely on speed. It relies on what the guest believes is happening around them.
Preston & Barbieri builds interactive dark rides, where guests stop being spectators and become part of the story. Each vehicle carries up to six passengers and is fitted with hand-held or vehicle-mounted light guns. Riders aim at targets placed throughout the scenes, and every hit triggers a response: victory lights, a target that drops, an animated figure that reacts. Scores are tracked through the ride, which is what brings guests back for a second run.
The whole attraction is designed around the story the park wants to tell. Scenes, vehicles, soundtrack and effects are developed together, and existing IP can be integrated where a licence is in place. Because the scenes are built rather than found, a dark ride fits spaces where other attractions cannot go: the illusion of distance comes from the design, not from the footprint.
